The Joint-Stock company «Designing, Surveying and Research Institute «Hydroproject» named after S.Y. Zhuk with great pleasure invites you to get acquaintance with history, traditions, experience as well as to-date status and development prospects of the Institute.

Foundation of the Institute was aimed at implementation of grandiose State Plan of Electrification of Russia adopted by the Government in 1922 for creation of powerful energy basis for development of industries, agriculture and social sphere of our country. This plan was successfully realized in the thirties of the last century with engineering and designing provision of specialists of our Institute.

Due to specific reasons the power engineering in our country for a long time has been developing separately from the other world resulting in development of Russian school of hydraulic and hydropower engineering. The Institute «Hydroproject» became one of the main national water power resources development school.

Our Institute embraces the full scope of aspects in designing the water-management and water power development projects. The Institute has designing and site investigation divisions and affiliates «Geodynamic Research Center for Power Industry» and Complex Surveying Expedition No.5 required to perform the full scope of designing, site investigations and research work at all stages beginning from preparation of water resources development schemes for water-management and power generation purposes till completion of construction and putting the projects in commercial service.

Specialists of the Institute have gained a unique experience in designing and construction of hydropower projects in different environment and climatic conditions, including those resting on soft soil foundations, on permafrost foundations, in tropics, in mountains and regions of high seismic activity.

Many projects, including all known types of dam constructed and successfully operating nowadays have been designed by the Institute «Hydroproject». The most known among them are as follows: the Aswan rock-fill dam, 111m high, in Egypt, the Nurek earth-rock-fill dam, 300 m high, in Tajikistan, the Tehri earth-rock-fill dam, 260 m high, in India, the Toktogul concrete gravity dam, 215 m high, in Kirghizia, the Inguri concrete arch dam, 270 m high, in Georgia and many other not less significant projects. A rich experience has been gained in designing and construction of both surface and underground power houses with different types of generating units designed for a wide range of heads.

Our Institute is a pioneer in tidal energy development for power generation. Our specialists developed and applied the method of water-retaining structures construction at tidal barrages using reinforced-concrete caissons, which was called “Russian method” in world power engineering practice.

Application of design solutions based on advanced up-to-date technologies aimed at reducing the terms and cost of construction and mitigation of environmental impact is the main principal of the Institute «Hydroproject». The applied design solutions are aimed at upgrading the effectiveness of investments, reducing the pay-back periods and increasing the profitability of the project.
