Research work

The main line of the Institute activities is a comprehensive designing of hydraulic and hydropower projects of any scale and complexity located in the areas of any environmental-and-climatic conditions including the areas of high seismic activity. Assurance of reliability and safety of the projects calls for engineering surveys, design studies and supervision of construction and operation of projects at an appropriate scientific-and-technical level.

The Institute has highly-experienced engineers and scientists in the field of hydro power engineering, engineering geology and water management. The Institute staff includes a large research team consisting of 13 Doctors of Sciences and 40 Masters of Sciences.

The Institute has the required structural subdivisions whose activities are aimed at application and development of the innovation methods of specialty site investigations, field and laboratory tests and studies, mathematical modeling of structures and their interaction with the foundations at various anthropogenic and natural factors.

Special attention in designing hydraulic structures the Institute engineers pay to reliable and safe operation of structures to be constructed in complicated environmental conditions. The structures are considered as a joint system with the foundation and environmental conditions making it possible to predict the physics of various phenomena associated with construction and operation of the structures. With use of up-to-date software the 3D mathematical models of the techno-natural environ (geo-seepage, stress-strain state, etc.) are developed for assessment and prediction of interaction of the structures and reservoirs with geological environ.

When designing a new hydropower project a comprehensive environmental impact assessment of construction of would-be structures is made and measures for mitigation of the impact are developed. The fish protection innovative technology, including “Method of selection of fish protection measures at hydropower plants” has been developed, scientifically-grounded JSC “Institute Hydroproject” and protected by numerous patents for invention.

Computational studies are based on the up-to-date software. Separate programs for the computational studies, including the program for stability analysis of embankment dams, rigid structures, natural slopes and various excavations, programs for monitoring the earth work reliability at the stage of filling heterogeneous soil materials, programs for analyzing the fluviomorphological processes, program for computer-aided selection of analogs of structures based on strength, deformation, permeability properties of rocks and hydro-meteorological records at the existing hydropower developments, etc. have been developed at the Institute.

Under leading participation of the Institute specialists an extensive regulatory and methodological basis has been developed and permanently updated in Russia for designing, construction and operation of hydraulic structures considering the international practice of development and operation of similar projects.

«Institute Hydroproject» performs the following scientific-and-technical studies and work
