· Study of deformation and strength properties of rocks in-situ and laboratory
· Laboratory tests of soils and water, study of physical-and-mechanical properties of rocks and chemical composition of groundwater, assessment of environ attack on concrete and metals
· Development of mathematical models of "structure-foundation (-reservoir)" anthropogenic and natural systems for implementation of multiversion diagnostic and prediction analyses for monitoring the project in the processes of construction and operation
· Analysis of behavior of hydraulic structures and foundations on the basis of the prototype observation records
· Computational validation of earthquake stability of structures and structural elements
· Expert appraisals, rendering consulting services for ensuring reliable and safe operation
Leading specialists of the Institute participate in the work of committees and commissions of several international organizations in the field of hydro power development such as ICOLD (International Commission on Large Dams), WPC (World Power Commission), IAHR (International Association on Hydraulic Research), ISRM (International Association for Rock Mechanics), ISSMGE (International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering), ITA (International Tunnel Association).
The Institute has own post-graduate courses for four disciplines: Foundation Engineering, Underground Structures; Hydraulic Engineering, Construction Technology and Planning, Engineering Geology, Geocryology and Soil Science.
